The multifidus muscles protect the spine from injury. When an lumbar spine injury occurs the multifidus muscles of the lumbar spine become inactive and begin to atrophy. This appears to contribute to chronic lower back pain. Particular exercises seem to reactivate multifidus muscles and restore the normal pattern of core stabilization and spinal protection.
